Deputy and Suspect Injured in Courthouse Area Shootout in Downtown Houston

DOWNTOWN HOUSTON – A deputy and a suspect were both injured in a shooting that unfolded outside the Harris County Family Law Center in Downtown Houston Monday afternoon.

According to a live press release, the incident began at approximately 12:20 p.m., when a man was seen walking with a weapon near Caroline Street. Authorities say he passed the Jury Assembly building before being spotted by a deputy, who gave chase.

The suspect fled across San Jacinto Street and continued down Congress Avenue. Multiple deputies reportedly encountered the suspect near the plaza at 1115 Congress, where a shootout occurred.

The suspect was struck during the exchange, along with one deputy who was hit in the back. The injured deputy was first transported to St. Joseph Medical Center and later moved to Memorial Hermann–Texas Medical Center. The suspect was also transported to Memorial Hermann by ambulance.

Officials say deputies involved in the incident are currently being interviewed as the investigation unfolds. Both the suspect and deputy are currently in stable condition. Deputy who was injured is identified as Sheila Jones, Harris County Constable Precinct 4.
