GALVESTON — A 25-year-old woman from Houston drowned early Wednesday morning while swimming with friends off the Galveston seawall, according to a Galveston Police press release.
Emergency responders were called to the area near Tower 24 at approximately 12:45 a.m. after receiving reports of a missing swimmer. The woman had been in the water with two friends when a wave struck the group. While her friends made it safely back to shore, they quickly realized she was no longer with them. A bystander then called 911.
Responding agencies included the Galveston Police Department, Galveston Fire Department, EMS, and Beach Patrol. The woman was located in the water at 12:49 a.m., and CPR was administered immediately on scene.
She was transported to the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Emergency Room, where she was pronounced dead at 1:32 a.m.
Lt. Austin Kirwin of the Beach Patrol said there is no indication of foul play. He confirmed with other outlets that the incident occurred as the group was swimming and was struck by a wave.
