GALVESTON — The future of campus security at Galveston College is uncertain as Galveston County officials consider ending the school’s law enforcement agreement with the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office ahead of schedule.
The current contract, which provides law enforcement presence and services at the college, is set to run through September 30, 2025. However, a recent item on the Galveston County Commissioners Court agenda suggested the possibility of an early termination, as soon as June 23. That proposal was later pulled before a vote was taken.
The reason for the potential early end to the agreement appears to be tied to discussions within the college administration about forming an independent campus police department. While no formal announcement has been made by Galveston College, county officials have referenced internal discussions underway regarding alternative approaches to campus safety.
As of now, no replacement security plan has been publicly confirmed. With summer courses beginning soon, the status of security services on campus remains a developing matter.
Galveston College has historically reported low crime rates on campus, but the pending changes have sparked concern about how the school will maintain a safe and secure environment during any transition in law enforcement services.
