Texas City’s Juneteenth Celebration Continues with Poetry Slam, Parade, and Golf Tournament

According to the City of Texas City, the community has a full lineup of events planned to celebrate Juneteenth and honor African American heritage and culture.

The festivities continue on Friday, June 13 with a Kentucky Derby-themed Poetry Slam at 7 p.m. at the Doyle Convention Center. Local writers and poets will face off for cash prizes, with tables and individual tickets available for purchase.

The celebration will feature a zydeco concert, games for kids, moonwalks, a BBQ cook-off, food trucks, vendors, and more. Admission is free.

Due to this week’s rainfall and the wet conditions it created, the locations of Texas City’s Juneteenth celebrations on Saturday, June 14 have changed. The City of Texas City’s Juneteenth Parade will line up at 4 p.m. on Bay Street between 9th and 11th Ave N. The parade will start at 5 p.m. and travel down 9th Street, ending at Phoenix Lane.

The parade will conclude at the Doyle Convention Center, which will now serve as the location of the Charles Brown Juneteenth Celebration, where guests can enjoy entertainment, vendors, activities and snow cones. Admission is free.

The event honors Texas City native and Grammy-nominated blues musician Charles Brown, best known for hits like “Merry Christmas Baby” and “Driftin’ Blues” and for his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Juneteenth celebrations will conclude with the annual Juneteenth Golf Tournament on Tuesday, June 17 at 1 p.m. at Bayou Golf Course. Teams of four will compete for prizes with special challenges, including closest to the pin, longest drive, and a hole-in-one contest.
