SEABROOK — With sails hoisted and young minds eager to learn, Lakewood Yacht Club’s annual Learn to Sail summer program is once again underway, introducing local kids to the joys, challenges, and life lessons of being on the water.

At the helm of the program is Terry Flynn, the club’s Waterfront Director, who has seen generations of children grow through these camps.

“This is more than a daycare-type program,” Flynn told KGTX 7. “We really focus on progression — from learning boat parts and safety to actually sailing on their own by the second day.”

This summer, the Learn to Sail program—supported by nonprofit organization Bay Access—will run five day sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., accommodating around 60 kids in total. In addition, Lakewood Yacht Club recently opened up its popular half-day introductory sailing camps to the public, bringing in another 55 to 60 young sailors. The clubs offer two core programs tailored by age and experience: “Optimist Camp” for younger sailors, and “Seahorse Camp” designated towards older kids.

With their families, kids will partake in a curriculum of rigging and de-rigging their boat and learning how to sail trim at various points of sail, while participating in other fun water games and team-building activities.

The cost of participating members is $190 per week. For non-members, $240 per week.

2025 Session Dates:
Week 1: June 23-27
Week 2: July 14-18
Week 3: July 21-25
Week 4: August 4-8

Spots are limited and filling quickly. Parents are encouraged to register early by calling 281-474-2511 or visiting the club’s website.

“This program is about more than just learning to sail,” Flynn says. “It’s about creating lifelong memories, instilling confidence, and maybe even sparking a lifelong passion for the water.”
