CLUTE — A 15-year-old boy is in custody after police say he opened fire on his landscaping co-workers during a lunch break Monday, killing two men and injuring a third.

The shooting happened around 1:18 p.m. on July 7 in the 200 block of Dixie Drive, according to a press release issued by Clute Police Chief James Fitch. Officers arrived on scene to find three adult male victims with gunshot wounds. A fourth employee had fled the scene and was not injured.

Witnesses gave officers a description of the shooter, and by 1:29 p.m., the suspect had been located and taken into custody in the 700 block of Plantation.

Police say all five individuals were part of a landscaping crew from Houston and had no known ties to Clute or Brazoria County. During lunch, the teenage employee, a Hispanic male from Houston, allegedly produced a handgun and began firing at his co-workers. He reportedly chased the fleeing employee while continuing to fire but did not strike him.

One man was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others were taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where one later died. The third victim remains hospitalized with injuries that are not expected to be life-threatening. Names and exact ages of the victims have not yet been released, but all were adult Hispanic males.

Authorities believe the suspect may have been experiencing a medical episode and he was first transported to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital in Lake Jackson before being booked into the Brazoria County Juvenile Detention Center. He is expected to face multiple felony charges.

The Clute Police Department thanked numerous agencies for their assistance, including the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office, Precinct 1 Constable’s Office, Lake Jackson Police, Texas Rangers, U.S. Marshals, and several EMS and fire marshal departments.
