GALVESTON — The Galveston Park Board has terminated Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis following his administrative leave earlier this year.
The dismissal comes amid ongoing investigations into the operations of both the Park Board and the Beach Patrol.
Davis was placed on leave in April after questions were raised about his decision to allow visiting lifeguards from the National Chilean Lifeguard Federation to stay in the Stewart Beach Pavilion, a facility that has since been demolished.
In a statement issued Monday, Interim CEO Marty Miles said the decision was based on the need for proper oversight of the city’s beach safety program.
“Every factor was taken into account,” Miles said. “My priority is having the right person leading the program responsible for public safety.”
Austin Kirwin, a 14-year veteran of the Galveston Island Beach Patrol, has been named interim chief.
Miles said the Park Board will continue supporting the Beach Patrol and its mission to protect swimmers in the Gulf.
