LEAGUE CITY – The League City Police Department has announced the creation of a new unit focused on reducing property crime in retail areas along the interstate. Called the Business District Unit, it will focus on preventing theft, vandalism, and similar crimes in busy commercial zones.
The program is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. The funding allows for six full-time officers to staff the unit.
Officers will patrol retail centers, parking lots, and nearby areas in both marked and unmarked vehicles, as well as on bikes. The unit will also take part in safety seminars, business visits, and public education events.
“This is a targeted, solutions-driven approach to a growing concern,” said Lt. Gonzales in a press release. “By combining increased presence with community engagement, we aim not only to respond to crime but to prevent it.”
The Business District Unit will also assist with other enforcement operations as needed.
Local business owners and residents are encouraged to contact the unit with concerns or to request extra patrols.
