GALVESTON – On July 14th, Galveston’s new City Marshal Heather Morris was officially sworn into her position at City Hall. Upon stepping into the position, Morris made history being the first woman to fill the marshal role, since the position was reestablished in 2016. Morris was selected following a competitive search with six other candidates, all of whom had backgrounds in law enforcement.
In the role of City Marshal, Morris will be responsible for a number of duties, including overseeing code enforcement, ground transportation, wrecker contracts, and golf cart permitting and parking operations. Additionally, she will work closely with the public and manage several employees, including the deputy city marshals and the parking enforcement team.
Morris has previously worked with the Houston Police Department, where she served for twenty years, leading her to become the department’s Assistant Chief. In the past, she has also assisted with natural disaster relief by being a part of the emergency response teams for both Hurricanes Ike and Harvey.
City Manager Brian Maxwell made a statement on the Galveston County social media, expressing support for Heather’s appointment to the position.
“Heather Morris brings a tremendous level of experience and professionalism to the role. We are excited to welcome her to Galveston and confident she will serve our community well.”
Not only did Morris work in the Houston Police Department, but she additionally served as Deputy Chief for the City of Miami, as well as most recently being the Interim Deputy Chief and Interim Chief of Police for the Aurora, Colorado Police Department.
