GALVESTON — Pier 15 in Galveston is set to become the permanent berth for the Battleship Texas, as plans move forward to relocate the historic vessel following restoration work.

The Battleship Texas Foundation has reached an agreement with the Galveston Wharves Board to secure the site, with the move expected to take place in 2026.

Before the ship arrives, several phases of work must be completed. This includes engineering and construction of the mooring system, dredging of the berth, permitting through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the development of shoreside facilities.

The ship is the only surviving U.S. battleship to have served in both World War I and World War II. After years of structural decline, it was removed from its longtime berth in La Porte in 2022 for major repairs. Its relocation to Galveston is intended to provide long-term protection and better public access.

“The Battleship Texas is a powerful symbol of our nation’s history,” the Battleship Texas Foundation stated on their website. “Permanently berthing her in Galveston is a true honor.”

Additional announcements are expected as engineering and permitting advance. Once docked, the ship will be open to the public as part of a larger historic site.
