Kids Can Launch Postcards into Space at Texas City Museum

Staff Reports Avatar

TEXAS CITY – The Texas City Museum is offering a unique opportunity for children this summer: create a postcard, and it will be flown into space on a Blue Origin rocket.

The activity is part of a temporary exhibit running through August 9 that focuses on women who contributed to the U.S. space program. Among those featured is Bernestine Dickey, a Texas City native who made history at NASA as the first African American Launch Package Manager and an Aeronautical Engineer involved in mission flight launches.

Children visiting the museum can design a postcard on-site using materials provided. The museum will ship the postcards to Club for a Change in West Texas, which will coordinate the launch. After the flight, the postcards will be returned to each child with a stamp verifying their trip to space.

The Texas City Museum is located at 409 6th Street and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for students, and free for children 6 and under. Memberships begin at $25.

A free admission day will be held on Wednesday, July 30. The final two hours of that day will focus on adaptive recreation for guests with disabilities, with crafts, snacks, and a raffle for a free membership.
