TEXAS CITY — A Texas City police officer seen using force during an arrest in a Kemah shopping center parking lot is under departmental review, the department’s public information officer told KGTX 7 on Friday.

The officer, identified as Peter Behler of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office Crime Suppression Unit, was involved in a physical confrontation with 25-year-old Weston Mabee on Aug. 11 at a shopping center near 400 FM 518. Police said the incident began when Behler checked Mabee’s license plate, which returned as invalid. Mabee allegedly refused to comply with orders to step away from his vehicle, leading to a struggle.

Video of the encounter, recorded by Mabee’s girlfriend, was shared on multiple social media platforms, was sent to various media outlets, and attracted widespread attention. Mabee’s girlfriend and three children were reportedly inside the vehicle during the incident.

According to the Texas City Police Department, the Chief’s Office consulted with the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office about the release of bodycam footage, but no public determination has been made regarding charges or an investigation. The department noted that all incidents involving officer use of force are reviewed for compliance with departmental policy and applicable law.

The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI have not issued any comment on the case.
