GALVESTON — Crews from the City of Galveston’s wastewater treatment plant division have contained a sewage overflow that occurred early Monday morning at the Airport Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Marissa Barnett, Galveston’s Communications Director, told KGTX 7 that roughly 2,500 gallons of foam were released from the facility into the canal near the Island Bay Apartment Complex and Moody Gardens. City crews responded quickly to contain the spill, and all visible overflow was cleaned up by 1 p.m. Monday, the city said.
The overflow was reported to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in accordance with state regulations. The city collected samples from various locations in the canal for testing and will continue to monitor conditions around the facility.
As a precaution, residents are advised to avoid swimming in the canal until further notice.
