GALVESTON — Lt. Austin Kirwin, a 14-year veteran of the Galveston Island Beach Patrol, has been selected as the new chief of the department, the Galveston Park Board announced Tuesday.
Kirwin, a Galveston native who has served as interim chief since March, was chosen from among 25 candidates. In his new role, he will oversee a team of lifeguards, peace officers and medically trained personnel who patrol Galveston beaches year-round.
This summer, Beach Patrol reported more than 138,000 preventative actions, 1,100 medical responses and more than 75 rescues, according to the Park Board.
“I’m thankful for the opportunity to lead this incredible team. It’s an important responsibility and one I do not take lightly,” Kirwin said in the announcement. “Galveston and Beach Patrol have given me so much. I’m proud to serve the community I grew up in, doing meaningful work I love in a place I care deeply about.”
Kirwin began lifeguarding while a student at Ball High School, where he captained the swim and water polo teams. He joined Beach Patrol in 2006, was promoted to lifeguard supervisor in 2012 after completing the law enforcement academy, and is now a certified peace officer and emergency medical technician.
“Austin is a strong leader and has proven over the past few months that he is ready and qualified for this role,” said Marty Miles, interim CEO for the Galveston Park Board. “He’s smart, direct, dedicated, mission oriented and a team player. His more than 14 years of dedication to Beach Patrol brings exceptional value to the Park Board and the city of Galveston.”
Kirwin also serves in the Texas Air National Guard and is an instructor in open water lifesaving, emergency medical response and personal watercraft rescue, the Park Board said. Outside of his professional roles, he enjoys outdoor activities with his wife, Aubrie, and son, Leo.
