Galveston to replace broken water valve in Indian Beach overnight Thursday

GALVESTON — The City of Galveston will conduct overnight water system improvements in the Indian Beach area beginning Thursday night, Sept. 11, into the early morning hours of Friday, Sept. 12.

Crews will replace a broken isolation valve on a 12-inch water main just west of Indian Beach Drive, requiring a temporary water service suspension for residents between 16 Mile Road and Indian Beach. The work is scheduled overnight to minimize disruption, and officials expect service to be restored faster than during past outages.

The project is part of a larger city initiative to install additional isolation valves along FM 3005, which will allow crews to shut down smaller sections of water mains when making repairs or conducting maintenance. Currently, larger shutdowns are sometimes required.

Earlier this summer, a contractor struck a water main in the area, forcing an extended outage that affected residents between 16 Mile Road and Silverleaf Resorts. City officials said replacing the broken valve is the first step toward preventing similar widespread shutdowns.

Additional valve installations are expected in the coming weeks and may continue for the next one to two months. Once completed, the city said the water system will be more resilient and allow for repairs without service interruptions across the entire corridor.
