GALVESTON — Three men were rescued early Wednesday morning after their fishing boat capsized near the South Jetty, according to the Port of Galveston Police Department.

Officers Ramirez and Hopkins, patrolling aboard the Clay Garrison, responded around 4:40 a.m. after Galveston police reported an overturned vessel in the Gulf. The waters were rough at the time, with two- to three-foot seas, steady winds, and low visibility.

By 5:15 a.m., the officers located the vessel and pulled all three men from the water. One man was transported to UTMB with minor injuries. The other two were evaluated on land and released.

Dispatcher Blaine Graham coordinated communications among several agencies during the rescue.

“This was a dangerous situation in the dark, with lives on the line,” Chief Kenneth Brown said in a statement. “Officers Ramirez and Hopkins trusted their training and each other, and they delivered. Dispatcher Graham kept everything moving behind the scenes.”

The Port Police credited regular training exercises with preparing their team for emergencies like Tuesday’s.

The department thanked Galveston Police, Galveston EMS and the U.S. Coast Guard for assisting in the rescue.
