OREM — The man accused of fatally shooting political commentator Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University has been identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Washington, Utah, according to reporting from Daily Mail.

Law enforcement sources told the outlet that Robinson was taken into custody late Thursday in southern Utah, roughly 260 miles from the Orem campus where Kirk was killed Wednesday night.

Daily Mail reported that Robinson confessed to his father, Matt Robinson, a law enforcement officer, before being secured by his family and turned over to authorities.

Robinson briefly attended Utah State University in 2021 on a scholarship but withdrew after one semester, Daily Mail said. Social media posts reviewed by the publication depict him with his parents and two younger brothers on vacations and celebrating milestones, including his college acceptance.

Authorities confirmed at a Thursday night press conference that Robinson could face the death penalty if convicted.

Robinson was arrested around 11 p.m. local time Thursday at his family’s home in Washington.

Kirk’s death has sparked nationwide reaction, with political leaders and activists weighing in on the violent attack. The investigation remains ongoing.
