GALVESTON — A string of overnight burglaries left several Galveston businesses with broken glass and stolen goods, Tuesday, into early Wednesday morning.

According to the Daily News, among the businesses targeted were AutoZone, Good Dough Kolache, the Gumbo Diner, and Nifany’s café. Police say the suspects smashed glass doors with rocks before taking items ranging from food to cash. Business owners told police they believe two or three teenagers may be responsible.

Rebecca Frank, owner of Nifany’s, described the shock of discovering her café had been broken into.

“I drove around the corner and realized there was no door anymore,” Frank told KGTX 7. “Inside, there was broken glass everywhere and a stone in the middle of the room. I thought I was literally going to have a heart attack.”

Frank said about $68 was stolen from the register, but otherwise nothing else was damaged. “In retrospect, I’m glad there was only a little bit in the register, because the perpetrators were able to make off with some loot and quickly disappeared without destroying anything else.”

The break-in caused some additional expenses, as the café had to quickly board up the door to protect the interior until a glass company installed a new pane. Frank said insurance does not cover the damage.

Despite the setback, she said the community’s support has been overwhelming. “It’s incredible how the residents here show their sympathy and even help to get our business up and running again. We have definitely chosen the right place here in Texas.”

Kurt Koopmann, spokesperson for the Galveston Police Department, confirmed that officers are aware of the incidents and are actively investigating.
