GALVESTON — A Monday afternoon fire damaged a garage apartment in the 5300 block of Avenue P ½, according to Galveston fire officials.
Battalion Chief James Short told KGTX 7 the fire started in the garage area of the two-story unit before spreading upward, causing smoke and flame damage to the second floor.
Crews brought the blaze under control in about an hour, but the department rotated firefighters frequently due to high temperatures. One firefighter was treated on scene for dehydration and later released.
The fire was contained to a single alarm, with units from Engines 1, 2, 4 and 5, Tower 1, Ladder 4, and two battalion chiefs responding.
The cause remains under investigation by the Galveston Fire Marshal’s Office.
