TEXAS CITY — Moore Memorial Public Library has received nearly $50,000 in grant funding from the Texas State Library and Archives Commission for the second year in a row, according to a Texas City Press Release.

The grant will be used to digitize microfilm of the Texas City Sun newspapers from 1960 to 1971, making them fully searchable and available online. Last year’s award funded a similar effort, helping to digitize newspapers dating back to the early 1900s.

Between the two grants, the library has received close to $100,000 to preserve Texas City’s history and make it more accessible to the public.

Theresa Mayfield, local history librarian at Moore Memorial, said once the latest project is complete, the papers will be available through the Portal to Texas History with full-text search capabilities.

“When this next batch of newspapers is online, coverage of the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement and the space race are just some of the significant stories that are headlined,” Mayfield said. “You can also read about the growth of Texas City and the surrounding communities. Having the newspapers online provides an expanded resource for researchers, students and community members. Finding information about a special story or researching your Texas City ancestors will never be easier.”

The digitized archives will be available for anyone to access from anywhere.
