LEAGUE CITY — The fifth annual Savannah Memorial 5K is set for Sunday, Oct. 26, at Hometown Heroes Park, honoring the life of Savannah Kinchen and raising awareness about domestic violence.
Kinchen, a Bay Area wife and mother, was killed by her husband on Oct. 21, 2020, during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Beth Dombrowa told KGTX 7, the event was founded by Kinchen’s former boss, Brock Bassett, as a way to remember her life and support Bay Area Turning Point. This organization provides shelter and services for women and children escaping abuse. At the time of her death, Kinchen had been organizing a drive to benefit the nonprofit.
The walk was held its first three years at Forest Park East Cemetery, where Kinchen worked and is buried, before moving in 2024 to Hometown Heroes Park to accommodate a growing number of participants. Organizers said this year’s event will feature a timed run for the first time, in addition to the traditional walk.
About 250 people typically take part, and more are expected this year. Since its inception, the 5K has raised about $50,000 for Bay Area Turning Point.
The event begins at 9 a.m. Oct. 26 at Hometown Heroes Park, 1001 E. League City Parkway. Registration is available at savannahmemorial5k.org.
