GALVESTON — A police chase that started in Hitchcock, ended in Galveston early Thursday, when an officer fatally shot a man during a standoff at Seawolf Park, a press release said.

The pursuit began around 4 a.m. after Hitchcock police tried to pull over a driver who briefly stopped, then sped away, according to investigators. The chase moved down Highway 6, onto Interstate 45, and across the causeway into Galveston.

When the driver finally stopped at Seawolf Park, Galveston PD Spokesman Kurt Koopmann said he got out of his vehicle and fired two rounds. Officers from multiple agencies, including Galveston police and the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, surrounded the area and tried to negotiate with him.

Police said the man eventually put the gun in his waistband but later pulled it out and aimed it in the direction of an officer. Another officer then opened fire, hitting him.

The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he died. His name has not been released.

No officers or bystanders were injured. Authorities have not said which agency the officer who fired the fatal shot works for.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story stated an officer fired multiple shots. We’ve recently been updated by GPD that it was two rounds.
