TEXAS CITY – College of the Mainland (COM) professor Bernie Smiley has once again been recognized among the area’s top educators, earning second place in The Daily News Readers’ Choice Awards for Best Professor. This marks the second consecutive year that Smiley has been honored in the community’s annual poll.
A COM press release stated, in 2024, Smiley was named Best Professor by the Readers’ Choice Awards. His 2025 recognition underscores his continued impact and lasting influence in the Galveston County community.
“I’m a lifelong member of Galveston County,” said Smiley. “To be recognized here, where I was born and raised, makes it even more meaningful.”
Smiley has been a full-time faculty member at COM since 2003, inspiring countless students through engaging classroom discussions and personal mentorship. Known for his “aggressively optimistic” teaching philosophy, he encourages students to embrace new perspectives and confidently face challenges.
“You might be right, or we might both be right. We just have entirely different perspectives on what’s going on here,” Smiley explained. “So, let’s talk about it—and that allows everybody to broaden their mind, which is exactly what college is supposed to be about.”
Smiley also invites prospective students to explore what COM has to offer, emphasizing the college’s affordability, strong support services, and small class sizes that allow for individualized attention.
“We’re here because we believe in education and we believe in the community college system,” he said. “I love what I do.”
Smiley’s recognition reflects College of the Mainland’s commitment to academic excellence and student success. COM faculty continue to be celebrated for their dedication, accessibility, and ability to prepare students for success both in their careers and in life.
