KEMAH — A stretch of FM 518 near Daniel Dror Drive has become a growing concern for many local drivers and first responders, with numerous crashes reported over the years — prompting renewed calls for safety improvements.
Kemah Police Chief Raymond Garivey says his department has documented at least 10 crashes at the intersection since he took office, describing the location as “dangerous” and “long overdue for attention.”
“I’ve done everything I can to get TXDOT to work on the intersection,” Garivey told KGTX 7 Investigates. “We’ve stressed this over and over. There’s been too many accidents.”
City Manager Cesar Garcia said the intersection has experienced more than 100 crashes in recent years, according to city records.
Garivey added that a previous city administration had reached an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation to install safety measures, but the work has not yet taken place. He is considering temporary steps, such as placing patrol cars and warning signs near the area to slow traffic.
In response, Danny Perez, Lead Public Information Officer for TXDOT, said the agency has reviewed the intersection and is coordinating with the City of Kemah.
“We have studied the location to determine ways we can improve safety at this intersection,” Perez said. “We will be working with the City of Kemah to determine the best options to move forward. At this time, we do not have any plans set, but it is always our goal to improve safety.”
City and community discussions include ideas such as installing a special median to restrict certain turns and help reduce collisions.
For now, drivers along FM 518 are urged to use extra caution at Daniel Dror Drive while city officials and TXDOT continue evaluating possible improvements.
KGTX 7 Investigates will continue following this story as it develops.
