GALVESTON — Galveston could soon play a key role in the United States’ next generation of polar shipbuilding, as part of a new U.S.–Finland agreement to construct 11 Arctic Security Cutters, according to The 1839.

The $6.1 billion program includes four vessels to be built in Finland and seven in U.S. shipyards.

Three of the American-built ships are expected to be constructed by Davie in Galveston, with the remainder at Bollinger Shipyards in Louisiana.

The agreement marks a major step in U.S. Arctic security cooperation and could bring new maritime and industrial opportunities to the Gulf Coast.

Davie has already announced plans to redevelop the former Gulf Copper facility in Galveston into a large-scale icebreaker production site.

The first vessel is expected to be delivered in 2028.
