Road Closures Announced for Busy Weekend of Events Across Galveston

GALVESTON – Galveston residents and visitors should plan ahead for several road closures this weekend as the island hosts multiple special events, including the Beach Girl Triathlon, ARToberFEST, Bike Around the Bay, Bike Around the Island, Third Coast PrideFest and the Toughest 10K.

City officials are encouraging drivers to use caution and expect temporary lane restrictions throughout the weekend.

Beach Girl Triathlon – Saturday, October 18, 7 a.m.–9 a.m.
The women’s-only triathlon will take place primarily on the grounds of the Holiday Inn Seaside Resort, 19320 FM 3005. The cycling portion will occur along FM 3005 from Kahala Drive to 1st Street. Riders will use the road shoulder, and officers will briefly stop traffic at U-turn and finish points to allow safe crossings. No major lane closures are planned.

ARToberFEST Galveston – October 18–19
The 28th annual ARToberFEST, hosted by The Grand 1894 Opera House, returns to Postoffice Street between 21st and 23rd, and 22nd Street between Market and Church. Streets in this area will close beginning Friday, October 18 at noon and reopen Sunday, October 19 at 5 p.m. Festival hours are Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Bike Around the Bay & Bike Around the Island
The two-day Bike Around the Bay begins Saturday, October 18, with cyclists arriving via the ferry before continuing along Harborside Drive, 25th Street, and Seawall Boulevard to 81st Street, ending at Moody Gardens. On Sunday, riders depart Moody Gardens via Jones Drive, Stewart Road, and 61st Street before exiting the island via the Causeway.
During the event, eastbound Seawall traffic between 25th and 81st Streets will be reduced to one lane to accommodate cyclists.

The Bike Around the Island ride is a separate, one-day event on Saturday, October 19, beginning and ending at Moody Gardens. Riders will follow a 20- or 43-mile course along Stewart Road and FM 3005. Police officers will manage key intersections, ensuring emergency access to the airport, fire stations, and residential areas.

Third Coast PrideFest – Sunday, October 19, festival 1 p.m.–5 p.m.; parade at 2 p.m.
The Third Coast PrideFest, hosted by the Historic Downtown Partnership, will be held Sunday, Oct. 19, with a family-friendly festival from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The parade will begin at 2 p.m. and follow a rolling route through downtown. Parade line-up begins Sunday at 11 a.m. and runs through 2 p.m. The route will start and end at 25th and Santa Fe Place, make two laps through downtown streets including Mechanic, 21st and Strand, and will involve temporary rolling closures between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Toughest 10K – Sunday, October 19, 6:45 a.m.–10 a.m.
The annual race, now organized by 3 Brothers Running, will take place primarily on the I-45 Causeway. The start and finish lines are located at the Galveston County Daily News, 8522 Teichman Road, with the turnaround point on Tiki Island. Temporary closures begin at approximately 6:45 a.m. and will reopen by 10 a.m., including:

  • I-45 southbound turn lane and adjacent traffic lane
  • Exit to Teichman Road ramp
  • Feeder road from Teichman ramp to Lewis Lane
  • Portions of Lewis Lane, 89th Street, and Teichman Road (one-lane local access maintained)
