GALVESTON — The City of Galveston will celebrate the grand opening of its new Sandhill Crane Soccer Complex on Wednesday, November 5 at 5:30 p.m. The public ceremony, held at 3348 7 Mile Road, will feature remarks from city leaders, a ribbon cutting, and refreshments provided by Better Parks for Galveston.
The Sandhill Crane Soccer Complex marks one of the city’s largest recent recreational developments, funded primarily through certificate of obligation bonds and hotel occupancy tax revenues. The new facility includes multiple lighted fields for youth and adult leagues, restrooms that double as storm shelters, bleachers for spectators, a 1.5-mile walking path, and a basketball court.
City officials say the complex is designed not only for local play but also to attract regional tournaments and sports tourism, potentially boosting hotel stays and local businesses.
“The Sandhill Crane Soccer Complex is a major step forward for Galveston’s parks and recreation system,” said Barbara Sanderson, Executive Director of Parks and Recreation. “It’s a space built for our community’s athletes, families, and visitors to come together and enjoy healthy, outdoor fun.”
The new facility is expected to host its first competitive matches later this fall.
