A 67-year-old man drowned Friday afternoon near Red Fish Island, Northeast of San Leon. The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office says Andrew Follett and his wife were on their sailboat when they anchored near the island and took a smaller boat to shore.
That boat drifted away, and Follett entered the water to retrieve it. Strong winds pushed the boat farther out, and Follett was in the water for 30 to 40 minutes before his wife lost sight of him.
A nearby boater helped search and eventually found Follett unresponsive in the water. CPR was started, and he was brought to Pier 6 in San Leon, where emergency responders pronounced him deceased.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the Sheriff’s Marine Division responded, along with investigators from Major Crimes and the Crime Scene Unit.
Deputies say the investigation shows no signs of foul play and indicates a tragic accident.
