TEXAS CITY — A 12-year-old boy died and six firefighters were injured after a rescue operation Sunday afternoon near one of the boat ramps at the Texas City Dike, officials said.
According to Texas City Communications Director Jennifer Laird, emergency crews responded after a 911 call reported two juveniles in the water amid extremely windy conditions.
Police, firefighters, and EMS personnel arrived at the scene and launched a rescue effort. The heavy wind pushed one of the rescue boats into nearby rocks, causing it to flip over, Laird said.
Both juveniles were pulled from the water and transported to a hospital, where one later died.
Six Texas City Fire Department and EMS personnel were also taken to local hospitals. As of Monday afternoon, four had been released, and two remained hospitalized in stable condition. One of the hospitalized responders was expected to be released later in the day, Laird said.
Officials described the wind conditions as hazardous and said the incident remains under review.
