Update: A judge has lowered the bond for an 88-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his terminally ill wife at their Galveston home on Monday morning.

GALVESTON — An 88-year-old Galveston man has been charged with murder after reportedly telling paramedics he shot his wife early Monday morning.

Galveston Police say officers were called around 4:45 a.m. to a home in the 3200 block of Dominique after EMS requested assistance on what was initially dispatched as a medical call. EMS had arrived minutes earlier following an alert from a medical device indicating a possible emergency.

Paramedics found 89-year-old Anita Leal dead from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. According to the Galveston Police Department, her husband, Ernest Leal, told EMS personnel at the scene that he had shot her.

EMS immediately notified police, who entered the residence and detained Leal without incident. He was taken to the Galveston Police Department for questioning and later booked into the Galveston County Jail.

Leal is charged with murder and is being held on a 80,000 bond.

The case remains under investigation, and authorities say additional details will be released as they become available.
