GALVESTON — Moody Gardens is preparing to open what it says is the largest indoor ice sculpture attraction in the United States. ICE LAND: Christmas Around the World will debut on Saturday, November 22, featuring massive frozen recreations of global landmarks.

Thirty sculptors from the award-winning CCA Ice Carving Team have been working on the exhibit, using more than two million pounds of ice. Recent additions include detailed carvings of the Trevi Fountain in Italy, the Parthenon in Athens, and the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.

The attraction is kept at 9 degrees and includes more than 7,000 blocks of ice, each weighing roughly 300 pounds. Some sculptures reach more than 30 feet tall. The project requires 37 days of continuous carving by artisans from Harbin, China, home of the internationally known Harbin Ice Festival.

Moody Gardens is also offering a live webcam where viewers can watch the carving process.

The live stream is available through Moody Gardens’ media center.
