Infant Botulism Confirmed in Galveston County; Officials Investigating Outbreak

Staff Reports Avatar

COUNTYWIDE – Health officials have confirmed a case of infant botulism locally, as federal and state agencies investigate a multi-state outbreak linked to certain infant formula products.

The Galveston County Health District says the confirmed case is separate from the ongoing outbreak, but both involve the same rare illness, which affects infants under 12 months.

Press release from county officials

Infant botulism is caused by a toxin that can affect muscle control and the nervous system. According to health officials, early symptoms may include constipation, difficulty feeding, a weak or altered cry, and loss of head control. The condition is treatable, but early medical intervention is critical.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is working with state partners to determine the source of the outbreak and whether additional products may be affected. Details on the investigation are still developing.

Officials are urging parents and caregivers to monitor symptoms and seek medical attention if they suspect infection. More information on the outbreak and guidance for families is available through federal health resources.

KGTX 7 will continue to track developments and provide updates, as soon as an outbreak source is confirmed.
