KEMAH — A bomb threat prompted a full evacuation of the Kemah Walmart on Sunday afternoon, after a robocall claimed multiple explosive devices had been planted inside the store, authorities said.
Police Chief Raymond Garivey told KGTX 7 the call came in at 4:16 p.m. The automated male voice reported that three bombs were hidden in the building and demanded a $10,000 ransom to prevent them from being detonated within 30 minutes.
Employees and customers were moved out of the store while officers from the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, Clear Lake Shores Police Department, and the Kemah Fire Department secured the scene. A U.S. Marshals K-9 team was brought in to assist with the sweep.
After a thorough search, investigators found no explosive devices. The store remained closed for part of the evening as law enforcement worked to trace the origin of the call.
Garivey noted that Seabrook were also handling bomb threats around the same time, though it’s still unclear whether the incidents are connected. League City’s Kroger also received one Saturday. Detectives from multiple agencies are continuing to investigate.
