TEXAS CITY — Five women were publicly recognized for their heroic response to a serious crash on I-45 earlier this month, where their quick action helped save the life of a severely injured motorcyclist, according to a city statement.

During the recent Texas City Commission meeting on Wednesday, the group was honored for stepping in immediately after witnessing the crash involving a female motorcyclist who was unconscious, not breathing and without a pulse.

According to Texas City Police Officer Logan Kelley, the women worked together to begin CPR and clear traffic so first responders could reach the scene without delay. Kelley took over chest compressions once he arrived, alternating with the group until the woman began breathing again and her pulse returned.

EMS crews were then able to reach the injured motorcyclist and transport her to the hospital.

Assistant Police Chief Manuel Johnson praised the women during the ceremony, calling their actions heroic and crediting their teamwork with helping save a life. The City of Texas City presented awards to Brandy Hockenbury, Kellie Frank, Hely Salhi, Jenifer Vance, and Ruth Oliver.

The motorcyclist’s husband, Garry, attended the meeting to thank the group personally. He shared that his wife remains in a coma but is alive because of the efforts of the women and responding officers.

“These people saved her life,” he said. “They told me they didn’t, but they did.”

After the ceremony, the group lingered in the lobby exchanging stories, phone numbers and hugs — strangers whose shared experience has now formed a lasting bond.
