HOUSTON – On Friday, the North Shore Mustangs (10-3) pulled off an upset against the undefeated Dickinson Gators (13-0) in an offensive masterclass by senior quarterback Kaleb Maryland. The 3-Star Utah State committee accumulated a grand total of five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) against the Gators’ formidable defense.
After the first ten minutes of the first quarter, Maryland tosses a short pass to senior receiver, Jaylen Bocard for a 51-yard touchdown, leading 7-0. That was only the beginning.
Following a 22-yard field goal by Dickinson’s kicker, Orlando Torres, Maryland cut the Gators’ defense throwing a 53-yard touchdown to junior receiver, Aubrey Johnson and bolting to the end-zone for a 26-yard rushing score to build the Mustangs’ lead, 20-3. However, Dickinson had momentum with quarterback Lorenzo Aguirre finding receiver Jamarion Payne for a Gators’ touchdown to cut the lead by 10.
In the second half, North Shore continued its dominance with Maryland, throwing a 10-yard touchdown to junior wide receiver, La’Damian Defreeze, and rushed for his second touchdown for 5-yards, following an interception by the Mustangs defense.
The Mustangs cemented the game with a rushing touchdown by junior running back, Kaden Bradley to build the lead to 44-23. With 32 seconds left, The Gators score a quick touchdown pass to Jamarion Payne, however, North Shore’s special teams blocked the extra point to score an extra two points, closing the game out with the final score, 46-29.
North Shore’s victory helps them advances to the semifinals to face the 14-0 Lake Travis Cavaliers on Friday, Dec. 12, following their win against the Johnson Jaguars.
While this may be the end of a great season for Dickinson, staff, students, and fans were very proud of their boys, many saying they hope the next season will bring even more victories.
