CLEAR LAKE SHORES — A League City man was killed overnight after his vehicle left the roadway and plunged into a bayou in Clear Lake Shores, prompting a multi-hour recovery operation involving the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office dive team.
According to authorities and reporting by I-45NOW, the crash occurred around midnight Tuesday in the 600 block of FM 2094, also known as Marina Bay Boulevard. Police said a small white sedan traveling westbound went down an embankment between two bridges and entered a canal fed by Jarboe Bayou.
A nearby resident who heard the crash called 911, Clear Lake Shores Police Officer Tosha Ramírez said. When first responders arrived, they found signs of a collision, including tire tracks in the grassy median, but the vehicle was not immediately visible and no occupant had made it back to shore.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office dive team was called in to search the bayou, where cold conditions complicated the response. Officials said the air temperature was around 43 degrees, with water temperatures near 55 degrees, raising concerns about hypothermia for divers.
Dive team members entered the water around 1:30 a.m. and later confirmed locating the submerged vehicle. A heavy-lift tow truck equipped with a crane was brought to the scene to remove the car from the water.
The Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as 38-year-old William Twomey of League City. Investigators said there were no immediate signs of foul play, and while the official cause of death is pending, preliminary information indicates Twomey drowned.
The medical examiner is awaiting toxicology results to determine whether a medical condition or intoxication may have contributed to the crash.
FM 2094/Marina Bay Boulevard was closed between Daniel Dror Avenue and Lawrence Road during the overnight recovery. All lanes reopened shortly after 7 a.m.
