Spike in Crashes at I-45 and FM 646 Raises Safety Concerns in League City

LEAGUE CITY – Drivers traveling through League City may want to use extra caution near the intersection of Interstate 45 and FM 646, where a noticeable spike in traffic crashes has occurred in recent days.

While traffic collisions are not uncommon in the area, there have been approximately four or more crashes reported at this exact location within the last three days alone. The repeated incidents have raised concerns among commuters who regularly travel the busy corridor.

According to League City Police Department spokesperson Jose Ortega, an increase in crashes is not unusual this time of year.

“Traffic collisions occur several times a day throughout the city under normal conditions,” Ortega said. “However, during the holiday season we typically see an influx in traffic volume, especially around shopping centers. This increase in traffic, combined with a rise in distracted driving, often results in a higher number of traffic collisions.”

The I-45 and FM 646 area serves as a major access point for nearby retail centers, restaurants, and residential neighborhoods, making it especially vulnerable to congestion during peak shopping hours.

Police are urging drivers to remain alert, reduce distractions, and allow extra time when traveling through the area.

“The League City Police Department encourages our citizens to stay off the phone and remain attentive at all times while driving,” Ortega said.

Officers say continued awareness and patience behind the wheel could help prevent further incidents as traffic volumes remain elevated through the holiday season.
