GALVESTON – Three kayakers were safely rescued Saturday night after their outing near the Galveston Causeway took a dangerous turn, according to reporting from i45now.

The incident unfolded around 9:15 p.m. when one of the kayakers called 911 to report that their vessel had overturned in the water and that two others were also struggling nearby. Emergency crews responded to the area near the Galveston Mitchell Causeway, where conditions quickly became hazardous.

Galveston Marine Response — a coordinated team made up of Galveston Police, the Galveston Fire Department, and Galveston Island Beach Patrol — launched a search and located the group roughly a quarter-mile from the southbound base of the causeway, near one of the bridge pilings.

Fire officials said one kayak had taken on water and sunk, prompting the remaining kayakers to attempt a rescue themselves. During the incident, one individual climbed onto a bridge support while awaiting help.

Galveston Fire Department Marine Unit 5 ultimately pulled all three kayakers from the water. The group, identified as two men and one woman, were evaluated by EMS at the scene and were not injured.
