GALVESTON — One person was killed Monday afternoon in a multi-vehicle crash on the northbound lanes of the Galveston Causeway, according to Galveston police.
Officers responded to the scene around 1:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a major accident. A preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a northbound Jeep collided with the rear of a truck.
The impact left the Jeep’s driver trapped inside the vehicle. First responders worked to extricate the driver, who was then transported to the UTMB Health Trauma Center in Galveston. The driver was later pronounced deceased. The individual’s identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
Police said two additional vehicles were involved in the crash. None of the occupants in those vehicles sustained serious injuries.
During the investigation, all northbound main lanes of the causeway were closed, with traffic diverted to the shoulder lane. The closure caused significant delays for motorists traveling off the island.
All northbound lanes reopened at approximately 4:10 p.m. The crash remains under investigation.
