Apartment Fire on West South Street Prompts Evacuations in Alvin

ALVIN — A fire at an apartment complex off West South Street prompted a large emergency response Monday evening, with residents safely evacuated and no injuries reported.

The Alvin Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at approximately 5:03 p.m. on February 9 after 9-1-1 callers reported heavy black smoke coming from the rear of the structure. Alvin EMS and the Alvin Police Department also responded.

According to officials, first responding officers and nearby bystanders began escorting dozens of residents out of the building before fire crews arrived. Firefighters continued evacuation efforts while starting fire suppression operations.

Responding units included Engine 11, Engine 12, Engine 21, Tower 1, and units 505, 506 and 507, which officials said arrived quickly and worked in a coordinated effort.

All residents were safely evacuated, and no injuries had been reported at the time of the release.

Two apartment units were temporarily displaced as a result of the fire. The apartment complex maintenance department is working to safely reconnect utilities.

The Alvin Fire Marshal’s Office remains on scene investigating the cause of the fire. The investigation is ongoing.

Fire officials also expressed appreciation for the coordinated response among emergency agencies and the assistance provided by community members during the evacuation.
