HITCHCOCK — A crackdown on alleged illegal gambling operations in the Hitchcock area led to seven arrests Wednesday, including the city’s mayor, according to Galveston County arrest records.
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, assisted by tactical units from area law enforcement agencies, executed multiple search warrants at game rooms and businesses operating slot machines on Feb. 18.
Among those arrested was Mayor Chris Armacost, who was charged with engaging in organized criminal activity. Records show Armacost was taken into custody Wednesday night at his home.
County property records indicate Armacost owns the Comfort Zone Washateria at 6739 Main Street, one of the locations targeted in the operation. Several seized 8-liner machines were seen secured on a trailer outside the business following the raid.
Detectives with the sheriff’s office and the Galveston County Organized Crime Task Force also served a search warrant at Hitchcock City Hall.
In a written statement, Hitchcock ISD Communications Director Jaree Hefner said the district is aware of Armacost’s arrest.
“He remains an employee of the district as we are reviewing all applicable information,” Hefner said. “Due to this being a personnel related matter, the district cannot provide further comment.”
The district declined to say whether Armacost has been placed on leave or restricted from district facilities.
The investigation remains ongoing.
