DICKINSON – A man with a gunshot wound was transported to a hospital Tuesday morning around 5am, after a crash on Interstate 45 in Dickinson prompted a freeway shutdown and police investigation.
According to Dickinson police, officers responded to a two-vehicle crash on the Gulf Freeway between FM 517 and Holland Road on Feb. 24. During the response, officers determined that one of the drivers had been shot.
Detective Guadalupe Vasquez told KGTX 7 the injured driver was taken by ground ambulance to HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake Hospital in Webster. As of 8 a.m., he was in surgery.
The southbound lanes of Interstate 45 were closed as investigators worked the scene. The closure was expected to last several hours, with motorists advised to use State Highway 3 as an alternate route.
Vasquez said it appears the gunshot was self-inflicted. The investigation is ongoing.
By 8:15 a.m., the scene had been cleared and the freeway reopened. Officials said the shooting investigation continues and additional information will be released as it is confirmed.
