DICKINSON — A fire inside a warehouse in Dickinson on Friday afternoon damaged an RV and caused heavy smoke damage, but firefighters were able to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby race cars and fuel.
The fire was reported just after 1:18 p.m. near the Blue Room off Highway 3. According to fire officials, an RV caught fire inside a garage area where approximately six race cars and four 55-gallon drums of race fuel were also stored.
“Our goal was to stop the fire from spreading to the rear of the building,” Fire Chief Keith Morgan said. Crews deployed a blitz attack in the middle of the structure to contain the flames to the front portion of the warehouse.
Mutual aid departments from League City and Santa Fe assisted at the scene.
Fire officials said the race cars sustained minimal damage, primarily smoke and soot. The front half of the warehouse showed heavy smoke damage.
Investigators said the owner was working on the RV when an electrical issue caused a short that sparked the fire. While attempting to remove electrical cables, the owner suffered a severe cut to his arm from the elbow to the wrist. He was transported to HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake in Webster for treatment.
The front portion of the RV, including the engine compartment, burned. Fire officials described the vehicle as a total loss.
