GALVESTON – Moody Gardens will host its 40th Annual Mardi Gras Ball for Special People on Sunday, March 1, 2026, continuing a four-decade tradition of providing a Mardi Gras celebration for individuals with special needs and their families.

The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Moody Gardens Convention Center in Galveston.

This year’s theme is “Out of This World,” and attendees are encouraged to wear space-inspired, carnival or Mardi Gras-themed costumes.

The event includes food, dancing, live music and entertainment for individuals with intellectual, cognitive and physical disabilities. Immediate family members, caregivers and special needs group facilities are also invited to attend.

Organizers require online pre-registration. Walk-ins will not be accepted.

The event relies on volunteers for setup, decorating, ushering and assisting with activities. Volunteer applications are currently available.

Additional information, registration details and volunteer opportunities can be found on the Moody Gardens website.

Four decades of continuity for an inclusive community event is no small thing. It’s the kind of tradition that quietly tells you something about a place and what it values.
