TEXAS CITY — A multi-agency enforcement operation along the Interstate 45 corridor in Texas City resulted in 55 arrests as of 5:30 p.m. Friday, according to GCSO Captain Tommy Maffei.

Law enforcement officials said the effort was tied to increased travel toward Galveston associated with the annual “Senior Skip Day,” when large numbers of students traditionally head to the beach.

During the operation, authorities recovered 10 firearms, including two reported stolen, and located various narcotics. K-9 units were deployed six times to assist in drug detection.

The operation involved the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, Texas City Police Department, and the Galveston County Constable’s Office Precinct 2, with additional support from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Officials said the increased enforcement presence was prompted by information suggesting some individuals traveling to the area could be bringing illegal drugs and firearms.

A mobile command center has been set up in Texas City. It is unknown if this operation will result in more arrests.
