HITCHCOCK – The Hitchcock community is mourning the loss of Hitchcock ISD Police Chief Brian Rusk, who died over the weekend at his Texas City home. He was 47.

Rusk, a 25-year law enforcement veteran, was found at his residence in the 1800 block of 16th Avenue North shortly after midnight Saturday after Texas City police and first responders were called to the home.

According to other outlets, Texas City Police Chief Landis Cravens said early indications suggest Rusk died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Galveston County Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death, though investigators say there are no signs of foul play.

Rusk had spent part of the evening celebrating a major moment for the district’s students. Just hours earlier, he escorted the Hitchcock girls basketball team back to Hitchcock High School after the team won the state championship in San Antonio. Players later invited him to join them in a photo with the championship trophy.

Rusk became the Hitchcock ISD police chief in May 2025 after previously serving as a lieutenant with the Hitchcock Police Department.

In a statement shared on social media, Hitchcock ISD described Rusk as a leader who prioritized building relationships to help keep students and staff safe.

“Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a leader, a mentor, and a friend,” the district said. “Chief Rusk was more than just an officer; he was a steadfast protector of our students and staff.”

The Hitchcock Police Department also expressed condolences, describing Rusk as a dedicated officer who cared deeply about the community he served.
