Atlantic Basin Breaks Record For No Hurricanes

The Atlantic has now broken the satellite-era record dating back to the 1960’s for the latest first hurricane of a season. The previous records were Hurricane Gustav, which became a hurricane on September 11, 2002, and Hurricane Humberto, which did the same on Sept. 11, 2013. This year there have been 5 names storms: Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly, and Edouard, but none have strengthened into a hurricane. This is largely due to the ongoing, record breaking, and strengthening El Niño. With only a 20% chance tropical development expected in the Atlantic over the next 7 days, that record will keep on going.
