FRIENDSWOOD – While up against one of the most formidable opponents of the 2027 season, so far, the Friendswood Mustangs stood toe to toe with the Iowa Colony Pioneers and emerged victorious. Sealing the deal with a 48-42 win, Friendswood’s winning streak persists, officially going 6-0.
At first, the first quarter had some warning signs for the Mustangs. Iowa Colony drew first blood with a 17-yard touchdown run by Pioneers running-back Izard Evans, and Friendswood’s kicker Noah Clegg missed a 41-yard field goal. But once cornerback Rit Johnson came away with an interception, Friendswood’s offense put the pedal to the metal.
Friendswood’s gunslinger quarterback Josh Brister and his offense answered with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Owens, and made the three throws of the night lobbing both 65-yard and 71-yard touchdowns to receiver/cornerback Rit Johnson, and another strike to Owens for a 78 yard touchdown. Owens would end the game with a new school record of 276 receiving yards.
Despite the fun back-and-forth from both teams, Friendswood’s self-inflicted wounds allowed Iowa Colony to stand a chance and keep things close until the fourth quarter such as missed field goal and a critical fumble on offense.
Regardless of their struggles, Mustangs head coach Jordan Johnson remains confident in his players heading into their next game on Thursday night against the Pasadena Eagles. Will their streak continue? Find out next Thursday!
