COM Texas City Campus Lockdown Lifted After Reported Suspect Located

Stevie Bernardoni Avatar

TEXAS CITY — College of the Mainland issued a lockdown alert Wednesday afternoon for its Texas City campus, instructing people to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” and advising those in the area to leave if they could safely do so.

The initial COM Alert told anyone unable to leave to hide and remain quiet, and to fight as a last resort if they were in direct danger.

KGTX 7 News contacted the League City Police Department after receiving the alert. Officer Jose Ortega said the situation was the result of a miscommunication and that there was no emergency in League City or Texas City.

KGTX 7 News later spoke with Jose Salazar of College of the Mainland, who said he was not sure why League City had been mentioned in connection with the alert. Salazar confirmed that the incident occurred in Texas City.

A second alert from College of the Mainland was issued shortly afterward announcing that the situation had been resolved.

“COM PD and TCPD have located the reported suspect,” the alert stated. “The individual is unarmed and not dangerous. Campus operations may resume normally.”

KGTX 7 News also attempted to reach the Texas City Police Department for additional information but had not received a response as of publication.

The circumstances surrounding the initial report and why League City was referenced remain unclear.

KGTX 7 News is continuing to seek additional information and will update this story as more details become available.
