GALVESTON COUNTY — Health inspectors documented food safety violations at four establishments in the Galveston County area, including improper food storage, temperature-control concerns, and sanitation issues.
The findings involved Basil Ying House in Texas City, Sushi Moshi in League City, Valeo Gas Station and C-Store in Dickinson, and La Mejor Meat Market in Bacliff.
Basil Ying House — Texas City
At Basil Ying House, located at 2820 Palmer Highway, inspectors documented several food safety concerns.
According to the inspection report, frozen meatballs were observed thawing on a countertop at room temperature. A bag of onions was also found stored directly on the floor, and food was left uncovered when it was not being actively used.
Inspectors additionally noted ready-to-eat foods and bulk food items without proper labeling, employees working without appropriate hair restraints, and food handlers without valid food handler certification.
The report also cited concerns about management’s knowledge of required food safety procedures.
Sushi Moshi — League City
At Sushi Moshi, located at 220 Gulf Freeway South, inspectors found beef and shrimp held in a preparation line cooler at 45 degrees Fahrenheit.
Cold-held foods requiring temperature control generally must be maintained at 41 degrees Fahrenheit or below to help limit bacterial growth.
The inspection report also noted that kitchen employees who handle food must obtain food handler certification within 30 days.
Additionally, cooked or prepared foods, including noodles and stuffed clams, were observed in a walk-in cooler without the required date markings indicating when the food must be used by.
Valero Gas Station and C-Store — Dickinson
Inspectors documented several concerns at Valeo Gas Station and C-Store, located at 5304 Highway 3.
The report noted mold-like buildup in the ice machine chute. Raw meat was also stored above tomatoes and lemons, creating a potential risk of cross-contamination.
Prepared foods and food removed from their original containers were found stored in a cooler without proper labeling.
La Mejor Meat Market — Bacliff
At La Mejor Meat Market, located at 942 Grand Avenue, inspectors documented concerns involving food storage and sanitation.
Ready-to-eat foods were observed without proper labeling or date marking. Food was also found uncovered beneath a vent and inside a cooler.
Other food items were stored directly on the cooler floor, creating a potential contamination risk.
The report further noted that no sanitizer was being used in the food preparation area to sanitize food-contact surfaces.
